This qualitative case study investigates how AI-integrated microlearning enhances digital literacy and character development among undergraduate students in a basic writing class. Four participants engaged in a four-session module centred on reimagining the legend of Suro and Boyo in Surabaya through narrative writing. Students used AI tools such as Padlet, PaperRater, ChatGPT and QuillBot for drafting, revising, and reflecting on their work. Data were collected through self-assessment checklists, writing artefacts, observation notes, and reflective responses. Digital literacy was assessed across five UNESCO domains: functional skills, information evaluation, content creation, ethical AI use, and reflective engagement. Findings revealed strong proficiency in functional and creative skills, consistent reflective use of AI, and moderate success in ethical AI application. Character development was measured using a rubric across five traits—empathy, responsibility, respect/humility, honesty/integrity, and perseverance. Student narratives and reflections indicated growing ethical awareness and social-emotional insight. Moreover, the observation data and writing artefacts provided deeper insight into the development of key character traits. The study concludes that microlearning modules, when embedded in local culture and supported by AI tools, can foster meaningful development in both digital competence and character education. This approach holds promise for holistic, value-oriented instruction in digitally mediated learning environments.
